Poster session at the Arlis Conference 2008

Thanks to all of you who visited my "stall" at the Arlis Conference. You gave me lots of ideas for new directions and leads in the project. Looking at my notes, here is my attempt at listing them here:

Image sourcing service/Image finder service - this is something they are trialling at the University of Derby. In particular they are looking at what to do with their slide collections. Good contacts for this are Heather Watkins http://www.derby.ac.uk/staff-search/heather-watkins and Sally Forrest S.Forrest@derby.ac.uk

Recommended image databases include Luna http://www.lunaimaging.com/. Also see TASI advisory notes http://www.tasi.ac.uk/advice/delivering/ims-insight.html and survey on other image management suppliers http://www.tasi.ac.uk/advice/delivering/imsoftware.html. These are particularly useful as they have asked the suppliers a core set of questions and scored accordingly. TASI are a great source for information on all sorts of things to do with images - from advice on image capture to online notes on using Flickr and putting images in blogs and wikis. They also offer really brilliant workshops!

University College Falmouth are starting a project to digitise the student degree shows. They are using an image product called MDID http://mdid.org/mdidwiki/index.php?title=Main_Page, which is open source. They are also digitising work by Cornish artists (clearing copyright directly with the artists). Catherine Worrall at Falmouth has developed a Collection Development Policy for digital collections.

University of Minnesota (Contact: Jodie Walz Doublejwalz@umn.edu have created a digital image database. They also offer something called a "Media Drawer" service, where they source digital images for a member of staff (instead of the traditional selection of slides in a slide wallet. They suggested because of the complications with copyright, that we focus on digitising images of archive and more unique material (i.e artists' books, ephemera collections).
